Het Nederlandse er veroorzaakt veel fouten in het Engels. Er moeten een aantal punten besproken worden vertaalt u met: There are several points to be discussed. Maar: *There arrived a number of visitors kan niet. Dit moet zijn: A number of visitors arrived.

Als er een indicatie van plaats is, kunt u there gebruiken. Ook als er als voorlopig onderwerp wordt gebruikt, kunt u vaak there gebruiken, zoals in: There are several points to be discussed of There are a number of options.

Helaas zijn er veel gevallen waarin een er-constructie niet zomaar met there te vertalen is.

Safe text-regel

Gebruik there alleen in combinatie met werkwoorden als to arrive, to be, to come, to exist, to remain, arise, follow.

Dus niet: *There will come new legislation.
Maar: New legislation will be introduced.

En niet: *There happened something unusual.
Maar: Something unusual happened.

En wel: There were several calls for you while you were out.

Voorbeelden:

• There is a delay at the suppliers.
• There are several points to be discussed.
• There came a moment when things had to change.
• There are a number of questions we would like to ask.
• There exist a number of laws to protect the consumer.
• There remains the question of the outstanding debt.
• There arose a number of unforseen problems.
• ‘There now follows a party political broadcast.’

Niet: *There happened something.
Wel: Something happened.

Niet: *There was built a new factory.
Wel: A new factory was built.

Niet: *There arrived a number of visitors.
Maar wel: A number of visitors arrived.

En niet: *There will come new legislation.
Maar wel: New legislation will be introduced.

Niet: *There happened something unusual.
Wel: Something unusual happened.
