Als u wilt dat er aan een probleem aandacht wordt besteed, zeg dan: We should focus on this problem, en niet: *We should pay attention (of: *give attention) to this problem.
Voorbeelden:
Niet: *In his address, the chairman gave / paid attention on the opportunities offered by emerging markets.
Maar: In his address, the chairman focused on the opportunities offered by emerging markets.
Niet: *In chapter II we will give / pay attention to the workload of river pilots.
Maar: In chapter II we will focus on the workload of river pilots.
Pay attention kan overigens wel als waarschuwing worden gebruikt. Zo kan een docent(e) tegen de klas zeggen: Pay attention! En bij apparatuur kunt u bijvoorbeeld de volgende waarschuwing aantreffen: Pay careful attention to the manual when assembling the equipment.
